Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Surprisingly, early symptoms of the stomach condition could appear in the eyes with any of these four signs indicating your risk.
Crohn’s is one of two conditions classified as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with the other type of IBD being ulcerative colitis.
Generally, IBD is associated with digestive symptoms.
However, the condition is known to also cause irritation and inflammation in one or both eyes with roughly 10 percent suffering with early eye symptoms first.
Crohn’s related eye disorders can be painful and in rare cases, could lead to vision loss.
According to Healthline the four eye conditions related to Crohn’s disease include:
- Dry eyes.
Leading health experts are unsure as to why the stomach condition can cause eye-related symptoms.
But being that it is an inflammatory disease, inflammation is known to typically affect other areas of the body.
Additionally, some people may suffer with eye disorders due to their medication they are taking to help treat Crohn’s.
If a person experiences persistent eye symptoms, they should see a doctor. A doctor will first carry out a visual examination of the eyes, said Medical News Today.
The health site continued: “They may then use a slit lamp, allied van lines complaints which is a high intensity light and microscope, to examine the eye further.
“The use of this instrument can help them confirm whether a person has uveitis or keratopathy.
“During the examination, the doctor may also apply drops of yellow dye to the eyes to check the cornea for damage.”
Other symptoms of Crohn’s disease include:
- Stomach aches and cramps
- Blood in your poo
- Tiredness (fatigue)
- Weight loss.
