In a major upset, Lib Dem candidate Sarah Green secured 21,517 votes, annihilating the competition with a majority of over 8,000 votes. The election was called following the tragic death of Tory MP Dame Cheryl Gillan who had held the seat for almost 30 years.
Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat leader said taking the historically Conservative seat showed “the Tory blue wall is beginning to crumble”.
He said: “This is a huge victory for the Liberal Democrats.
“The people of Chesham and Amersham have sent a shockwave through British politics.
“We were told it was impossible for any party to beat the Tories here in Buckinghamshire.”
The by-election defeat marks the first time the seat, first formed in 1974, has been lost by the Tories.
Sarah Green won the vote with a staggering majority of 8,028 over Conservative rival, Peter Fleet, who garnered 13,489 votes.
The Yellow victory overturned Dame Cheryl Gillan’s 16,000 vote majority from the 2019 General Election.
Mr Davey said: “We were told this seat was too safe and the Tories too strong.
“This Liberal Democrat win has proved them utterly wrong.
“Across the south, the Tory Blue Wall is beginning to crumble.
“Here and in great swathes of the country, only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservatives and breach their Blue Wall.”
In her victory speech, Ms Green said she was “humbled” by the faith of the public in the constituency and promised she would “hold the government to account.”
She added the Conservative party had “taken people across the country for granted for far too long.”
Mr Fleet said his defeat in the election was a “very disappointing result”.

Speaking on Ms Green’s victory, he said: “It’s an absolutely extraordinary result which must take into account the fact that the Liberal Democrat party didn’t just throw the kitchen sink at this constituency, I think it was the microwave, the table, the oven, the dishwasher, the dog, the cat and anything else that was lying around as well.”
The by-election result follows the Prime Minister’s victory over the Labour party last month.
Mr Johnson cut swathes from the Labour-held red wall constituencies during May’s Super Thursday byelections.
However, experts predict the result in Chesham and Amersham will be raising alarm bells for Tory strategists.
