Remainer Femi Oluwole was met with confusion and shock when he claimed fishermen in the UK have become alcoholics out of despair from Brexit restrictions on their industry. Mr Oluwole spoke with Patrick Christys and Alexandra Philips on TalkRadio as he insisted Brexit had proven detrimental to the fishing industry. Mr Oluwole also faced criticism online following his comments.

He said: “Fishermen who are losing their homes because of the Brexit restrictions that have gone up since January 1.

“Or, and I quote, I am sure people have turned to alcohol because of this.

“You haven’t spoken to the fact exporters who are now reporting that 68 percent of trade has been lost with the EU.”

The TalkRadio host then interrupted to ask for clarification from Mr Oluwole.

He said: “I’m sorry, did you just claim that Brexit is turning people into alcoholics?

“Is that what just happened there?”

Mr Oluwole replied: “That is what fishermen themselves have said when they were interviewed in Cornwall.

“This is a result of the restrictions that have gone up.

Brexit: Femi says fisheries may not be resolved for 10 years

“We saw fishing companies drive down to Westminster and park their lorries on the steps of Downing Street because they were complaining about the damage that has been done to their industry.

“This is because of Brexit, a policy that we spent five years on championing primarily for the fishing industry.”

The Remainer was swiftly met with ridicule on Twitter for his claim and anti-Brexit stance.

One social media user wrote: “Femi can’t possibly believe what he spouts.

Another added: “Femi’s disrespect for our nation is hard to take.

“He only sees life through European rose-coloured spectacles.”

Another wrote: “Femi has never, not once, been interested in the well-being of our fishermen until now, I wonder why.”

Fishermen across the country have argued Boris Johnson should have secured a better fishing deal.

However, the Prime Minister has insisted Britain now has greater control over its waters and who fishes in them.
