A wildfire burning north of Wolcott has closed Colorado 131 in both directions and large air tankers are dropping fire retardant.
The Alkali Creek fire started Friday near the 4 Eagle Ranch, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.
Colorado 131 is closed from U.S. Highway 6, just north of Wolcott, north to State Bridge near the 4 Eagle Ranch, the sheriff’s office said. There is no estimated time of reopening.
Multiple authorities are responding including the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, Eagle River Fire Protection District, Gypsum Fire Protection District, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol and the U.S. Forest Service – White River National Forest.
At about 3:40 p.m. Friday the fire was about 100 acres burning in sage, pinon and juniper.
“Gusty winds are creating erratic fire behavior,” the sheriff’s office said. It is 0% contained.
The Horse Mountain subdivision has been put on pre-evacuation notice, residents should be prepared to leave immediately.
Two single-engine air tankers and a helicopter are working on the fire supporting ground crews.
Just before 3 p.m. hunters were evacuated from the Muddy Pass Road area.
