Arvada police shoot carjacking suspect after chase Wednesday night

A carjacking suspect is in the hospital after exchanging gunfire with police following a chase Wednesday night.

Arvada police spokesman David Snelling said officers were in the area of 64th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard at a King Soopers investigating a felony menacing call involving a gun and a knife around 9 p.m. While there, the sound of a gunshot across the street near Walgreens drew the officers’ attention.

According to Snelling, when they got to the other parking lot, they saw a woman exit a black SUV limping. At that time, a man in the vehicle took off. The woman told officers her car was stolen at gunpoint, Snelling said.

Officers chased the vehicle for several blocks. Snelling said officers “used their vehicles to terminate the pursuit” and the man got out of the suspected stolen car to fire at officers. That’s when Arvada police reportedly gunfire, hitting the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where his condition is stable.

The woman sustained an injury from debris but does not have life-threatening injuries, police said.

At least one officer from the Arvada Police Department is being placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
