A baby girl in China who was dumped beside a rubbish bin with her umbilical cord still attached was rejected by her parents because they wanted a boy according to reports.

The tot’s father, named on local reports as Zhang, was spotted on CCTV ditching her in a street in Dongguan, Guangdong province.

Dongguan Police released a statement on Chinese social media platform WeChat that confirmed they had identified the man and waited outside the suspects’ home until they returned from work to make the arrest.

The statement read: "It was found that at 1am on July 29, 2020, Li (female, 21 years old) gave birth to a baby in a rental house… and discussed with her husband Zhang (24 years old).

"Later, the two decided not to have children, so Zhang took (the baby) to a trash can in Dazhou Community and abandoned (it)."

The police statement added that "after interrogation, Zhang and Li confessed to the crime of abandoning the baby".

They told police they chose to abandon the girl because "they couldn’t afford to raise three children altogether".

The pair were both detained on charges of child abandonment and Zhang has been taken into custody while Li has been released on bail pending trial, according to authorities.

Boy children are more prized in Chinese society because they can carry on the family name, but they are also rarer.

In Dongguan, in particular, women outnumber men to such an extent that many men openly have more than one girlfriend, and it’s widely accepted.

The industrial powerhouse of southern China is packed with female factory workers and many of them pay their male partners’ expenses in order to keep them

One local man, Li Bin said he had three girlfriends who worked in factories.

He lives with one, is in a relationship with another and treats the third as a lover.

"They all know each other," Li Bin said.

"My third girlfriend works close by. She often looked sad so I went to talk to her.

"She proposed that we start dating. I told her, 'I already have two girlfriends, I can't have a third. We can be lovers.' She agreed."
