Bomb squad shuts street after paramedics find ‘military hand grenade’ in house

A street in Stevenage has been closed after paramedics discovered a suspected military hand grenade at a house.

The discovery was made in Sandown Road, Stevenage, on Monday morning and the road has since been closed in both directions while emergency services deal with the situation.

Gary Sanderson, of East of England Ambulance Service, tweeted: "Sandown Road in Stevenage is currently closed near to Lingfield Road junction in both directions due to an ongoing Hertfordshire Constabulary incident.

"East of England Ambulance Service & East of England Hazardous Area Response Team at scene."

Police officers attended the scene and the house and neighbouring properties are said to have been evacuated.
