A British woman has been murdered by a gunman in her rented home in Pakistan, it has been reported.

The woman, identified only as Maya, was found to have been shot in the head and arrived in the country two months ago from the UK, according to police superintendent Sayyed Ali.

Mr Ali told that Maya's friend was living in an adjoining room in the upper part of the house and she is assisting with the investigation in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

An unidentified caller alerted police to the murder and forensic experts visited the scene and cordoned it off.

The authorities are looking for two suspects in connection with the murder.

Maya was reportedly 25 years old. She is said to have been lying in a pool of blood with her mobile phone near her body.

Mr Ali said: "We have seized the mobile phone for forensic analysis.

"We are also after two suspects and will share further details at a later stage."

Maya's parents and other family members abroad have been contact, the police say.

Due to global travel restrictions they are unable to go to Pakistan. The police were trying to convince her parents to make any close relative living in Lahore the complainant of the case.

The case would be registered once the police get an application in this regard, while the body has been moved to the city morgue for an autopsy.

Lahore is the second biggest city in Pakistan after Karachi with a population of over 11 million.
