The suspect in the Buffalo shooting once beheaded a cat, according to an entry in his journal.

Police say Payton Gendron, 18, posted a sick racist manifesto online before carrying out the massacre at supermarket in the US city on Saturday (May 14) in which 10 people died.

Two people were also injured, with Gendron live streaming the attack.

The teenager is said to have previously visited Top's Supermarket disguised as a homeless person to carry out a "reconnaissance" mission, manager Shonnell Teague said.

Now it has emerged that Gendron had also confessed to committing disgusting animal abuse in a journal he kept online.

An entry from March 25 on the Discord app saw him provide grisly details of how he butchered the pet after he discovered it attacking Paige – his family's cat.

Gendron recalled eating pizza bites when he heard his cat "scream" from the garage and wrote next: "I quickly enter and the grey cat was attacking her. I then spent the next hour and a half chasing the cat around the garage and stabbing it with my knife (the camo one).

“It bled from the mouth at about 11:00 and at about 11:45 I was able to grab the cats tail and wind up and smack the cats head on the concrete ground.

“I did that a few times and when it went limp I grabber [sic] a hatchet and swung at its neck ~20 times until it came off.”

After telling his mum about killing the feline, he claims she handed him a box to bury it in the garden and dug a "shallow" grave.

Another journal entry saw him describe the cat as having "hung out with me more than anyone else in the last few years."

He added: "I hope when I’m gone my family can take care of her properly”.
