Children among ’20 dead’ as people remain trapped under earthquake rubble

Eight children have died and many more fatalities are feared after a massive tremor hit the cities of Harnai and Shahrag in Pakistan just after 3am local time on Thursday.

Latest estimates by officials suggest that 20 lives have been taken in total as houses collapsed on residents in southwest Pakistan the middle of the night.

Sohail Anwar Hashmi, Deputy Commissioner for Harnai city, told Pakistani newspaper Quetta Voice via telephone: "We have received 15 dead bodies”

He also said the number of injured was more than 100. In the nearby city of Quetta no casualties have been reported, but people were seen fleeing from their houses into public spaces for safety.

Quetta Voice reports that a number of the buildings which fell in the quake were mud-walled houses.
