While Chinese state media are extolling Xi Jinping for successfully commanding the “people’s war” against coronavirus, a new epicentre of the deadly pathogen has emerged in the northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Liaoning, and Jilin. In Jilin province, teams of government workers have been rounding up sick people as part of what they call a “wartime” campaign. Citizens of the northern city of Shulan have described the atmosphere as tense.

One resident called Li Ping, who has stocked up on meat, eggs, and noodles explained that she is preparing for an escalation of the imminent lockdown imposed by Beijing authorities.

According to the New York Times, she said: “The government’s controls now are very strict.

“As long as we obey and not go out, it will be all right.

Police in the northeastern city of Shenyang have surrounded the 463 People’s Liberation Army Hospital in the city of over eight million inhabitants.

They have prohibited anyone from leaving or entering the facility.

A local man shot video of the scene and released the footage on Chinese social media, he stated: “This is serious.

“No one is allowed in or out.

“Doctors are not even allowed to leave the hospital”.

The man added on social media: “The situation is far worse than it appears to be.

“Hundreds of people have come in contact with a virus carrier at the hospital.

“The police have been catching people all over the place.”

The Chinese government claims that most of the recent cases of coronavirus in the northeast were imported from Russia.

While the border remains open to Chinese nationals, state media has encouraged Chinese citizens to not return to China from Russia during the pandemic

Wang Bin, a National Health Commission official, during a briefing on Sunday pointed to people returning from Russia, which is currently on eof the world’s coronavirus hotspots.

She said: “Imported cases from overseas and clustered infections domestically have created dual pressure on us in containing the virus.”

One resident of northeastern China who is caught in the renewed lockdown said: “I have really experienced the hardship that the people of Wuhan felt at the start of the year.”

The social media user called Dengaide Meigui posted on Weibo, a Twitter-like service: “I really want to cry.

“I don’t know how long we will have to live our days like this.”

But, Chinese state councillor Wang Yi, speaking at his annual news conference on the sidelines of China’s parliament, spoke out about other nations accusing Beijing of a cover-up.

Mr Wang, who is also China’s foreign minister, said: “Regretfully, in addition to the raging coronavirus, a political virus is also spreading in the United States.

“This political virus is using every opportunity to attack and smear China,”

He added: “Some politicians have ignored the most basic facts and concocted too many lies about China and plotted too many conspiracies.

“I want to say here, don’t waste precious time any longer, and don’t ignore lives.

“What China and the United States need to do the most is to first learn from each other and share their experience in fighting against the epidemic, and help each country fight it.”
