Demaryius Thomas cause of death: Police found him dead in the shower

Demaryius Thomas, former star wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, was dead in the shower by the time police arrived Thursday night at his Georgia home, according to a Roswell police report.

Officers responded just before 7 p.m. to the retired player’s house on reports of someone suffering cardiac arrest, police wrote in an incident report. Dispatch alerted officers that the victim was unconscious and not breathing.

When officers entered the bedroom shower, they saw Thomas lying on this back, authorities said in the report. One officer tried moving the former player’s arm.

“It was apparent from rigor mortis that Demaryius was deceased,” the officer wrote.

His body was transported to the Fulton County Medical Examiner, police said.

“A really good family guy”

LaTonya Bonseigneur is still trying to process the shock of her cousin’s death less than 24 hours later.

“We were like brother and sister,” Bonseigneur told The Denver Post on Friday morning.

Thomas came to live with Bonseigneur’s family when he was around 11 or 12, she said, and her parents gave him chores just like the rest of the family.

The future NFL star was quiet growing up, Bonseigneur said. Incredibly athletic, of course, and smart.

“He was very good student,” she said. “He made good grades … my parents didn’t have to tell him twice to do his homework.”

But even after going pro and making millions, Thomas didn’t change, Bonseigneur said. He would welcome family at home games in Denver, providing a sky box. After the final whistle, the wideout would sign autographs and take Bonseigneur’s young daughter and throw her on his shoulders.

“He was just a really good family guy,” she said.

After his retirement, they would hang out at his Roswell home, watching TV or lounging by the pool. Thomas stayed in great shape, Bonseigneur said, working out and eating well.

“He was enjoying retirement,” Bonseigneur said. “Enjoying life.”

The last time she saw Thomas was at her father’s funeral in November.

“We didn’t talk about his health or anything,” she said. “He was just Demaryius.”
