A doll and a bottle have been found at a golf course where a newborn was tragically found dead, detectives confirmed following a plea to the public.

Merseyside Police conducted an extensive search of Brackenwood golf course following the discovery of a dead full-term baby on Friday, January 29.

The force had pleaded with the public to continue to help them with their investigation and confirmed that police found a tiny toy baby doll in the wooded area around the course.

According to the LiverpoolEcho, officers also discovered a plastic protein shake or water bottle with a red top.

Detective Chief Inspector Judith Blease said the force isn’t sure "if the doll or bottle is in any way connected" but asked anyone who believes they may have seen either item to contact police.

The force will then be able to "eliminate" the items from the investigation if necessary or proceed with the investigation.

Most importantly, Detective Blease said: "We are continuing to work closely with our partners to follow a number of potential lines of enquiry as we all know how important it is for us to find the baby’s mum and ensure she is safe and well and has the help and support that she needs."

She added: "We know there has been a huge outpouring of sympathy from the local community and we have received offers of assistance and donations of clothing and blankets for the baby from local charities and bereavement groups.

"We are grateful but would ask that no further items are donated."

She went on: "We would continue to ask for anyone who has information to please come forward.

"It is vital that we are able to find the baby’s mum and reunite the baby with his family so that he can be put to rest."

Police believe the baby may have been at the course for several weeks before being discovered by two dog walkers and forensic tests are being carried out to establish the cause of death.

Enquiries into the recent birth of local baby boys in the Wirral have also been conducted and will be extended to the wider Merseyside area.

The local authority and health and social care colleagues have been aiding officers in the search but at this stage, the baby’s mum has not been traced.
