An angry driver launched an attack on another motorist in a violent row over a car parking space.
Abu Umar, 36, was trying to park in the same space as another driver, saying “I've been waiting for this spot”, at which point his victim began recording him on his phone.
Umar then grabbed a bat from the boot of his Audi, and struck the man with his weapon, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Manchester Crown Court heard how he was left with broken bones in his leg – a fractured tibia and fibula in his fight leg – and is now unable to stand for long periods, which affects his work as a pharmacist.
The man from Oldham was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.
In an anonymous personal statement from the victim, he detailed the long term damage caused by the attack, explaining how the scars will “never fade”.
Prosecutor Robert Smith said: “His relationships have been affected, he had pulled away from people who cared for him as he felt like a burden on his family and said the attack left a permanent impact on him and his life.”
But Umar's barrister Ronnie Bergenthal claimed that his client is “remorseful”, and “accepts responsibility” for what happened.
He told the court: “He was going through emotional turbulence having split up with his partner. He has been suffering from depression.
“He is normally tasked with keeping the peace with his work in security, so this has been alien to him and it is something of deep regret and shame.
“He has tried to offer £2,000 compensation to the victim. He wishes he could simply turn back the clock.”
Despite Recorded Anna Vigars QC accepting that it was “out of character” for the man, he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.
