Former police dog ‘cries’ after reuniting with handler she hasn’t seen for years

This is the heartwarming moment a retired police dog 'tears up' in a surprise reunion with her former handler.

Wangwang, an eight-year-old German shepherd, worked as a sniffer dog at security checkpoints in Xichuan county in Henan province, central China.

She retired in June 2019 and was found a forever home to live the rest of her life with. But it meant separating from her handler.

Last month, the police handler decided to give a surprise visit to his furry pal while patrolling in a neighbourhood near Wangwang's home.

In a recent clip shared on Xichuan Police's Douyin account – the Chinese version of TikTok – shows the police officer calling for Wangwang outside his home.

The excited pooch darts through the front door and runs into her handler's arms.

Wangwang rubs on his legs and appears to cry while she stays beside the officer.

When the patrol unit heads back to their police vehicle, the loyal dog refuses to let them go and sits right by the handler.

The post read: "Wangwang's hair is turning white but she is well fed, she is getting fat.

"It is always hard to bid farewell to your buddy."

Viewers had their hearts melted at the adorable pooch's emotional reunion.

One wrote: "The dog is welling up. Dogs are really loyal companions, please treat her well!"

"You can tell how much Wangwang misses her handler," a second commented. "You can understand when the dog greets you belly up."

Some viewers wondered why Wangwang was not allowed to stay with her handler.

Xichuan Police answered in the comments: "Police dogs are generally well fed at the training centre but our officers could not dedicate their time to play or exercise with retired dogs.

"They will be better looked after in a suitable family than staying in the training centre."
