A German police force has been forced to apologise after shocking pictures emerged this week of officers doing press-ups on a memorial for Jewish Holocaust victims.

The images, published by German newspaper Berliner Zeitung, show two men in police uniform using stones from the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin to elevate their torso during the muscle-building exercise, LadBible reports.

It has been reported that the pictures are stills of a video taken the officers themselves while they were on duty around the central area of the city for a protest earlier in the year.

The memorial, which is made up of 2,711 grey blocks of various sizes, is located close to Berlin's famous landmark Brandenburg Gate.

It is dedicated to the memory of the six million Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime between 1941 and 1945.

Berlin Police Chief Barbara Slowik apologised for the actions of the officers, and said they were not representative of Berlin police as a whole: "The behaviour of the colleagues disregards what this very memorial stands for and does not correspond to the respect that must be shown to it and that is shown to it by the Berlin police."

"For me, it also violates the memory of those who were murdered," she added.

A police union meanwhile called for consequences for the stunt, and described it as "tasteless".

A spokesperson from the GDP union said: "The Holocaust memorial is not an adventure playground. This inexplicable action mocks the genocide of millions of people and tramples on the values that our Berlin police."

Chief Slowik has confirmed that the force will open an internal investigation into the incident.

The outrage comes only days after an influencer left onlookers "horrified beyond words" when she was filmed posing on top of one of the stones at the memorial.

In the viral clip, shared on TikTok by the account @influencersinthewild on Friday (October 29), a blonde woman can be seen modeling a black sports bra and leggings while draped over the structure.
