Instagram influencer, 24, murdered and stuffed in suitcase by ex-boyfriend

A young woman who was just about to set off on a glamorous holiday with her boyfriend was murdered by her ex who shoved her body in one of her suitcases.

Maxim Gareev, was convicted of killing influencer Ekaterina Karaglanova, 24, after her body was found naked and stuffed in a suitcase at her flat in the Russian capital Moscow.

A press release from Moscow’s's Nikulinsky district court, says that Gareev will have to serve the sentence in a maximum-security penal colony.

The 33-year-old admitted to killing social media starlet Ekaterina, saying that she had mocked his performance in bed.

He was quoted as saying: "She repeatedly insulted me, she was completely humiliating about my sexual abilities and dismissive of my financial resources. I was at my wits' end."

Gareev will also have to pay 2.5 million roubles (about £29,400) in damages to the victim’s family.

In August 2019, Gareev told cops he had gone to confront Ekaterina at her flat in south-west Moscow because he had discovered that she was also in a relationship with a wealthy 52-year-old man she had met over Instagram.

He said he lost his temper when he turned up at her property and found that she had already packed a suitcase ready to go on a trip with the other man.

The young woman and her new lover had reportedly planned to celebrate her 25th birthday on July 30 in Amsterdam.

According to Gareev, Ekaterina had refused to give up her relationship with the older man.

She also allegedly suggested to him that he was inferior both financially and sexually to her new lover.

He told cops he had grabbed a knife and repeatedly stabbed her in the chest before finally cutting her throat.

He then fled but was tracked down and arrested after CCTV showed him leaving the property with a suitcase.

Police found him hiding in a rented apartment in the town of Kotelniki near Moscow.

He said the body had been in the suitcase but when he failed to find a place to hide it, had returned to the apartment and dumped it there before putting his own blood-soaked clothing in a separate suitcase and dumping those at a landfill site.

When Ekaterina’s mother had been unable to contact her, she raised the alarm with the landlord and he then discovered the young woman's semi-naked body stuffed in a suitcase.

Police quickly tracked down her 52-year-old boyfriend, who confirmed they were planning to fly to Amsterdam, but who had an alibi for the time of the murder.

Ekaterina had been studying to be a doctor, but found it more lucrative working as a model and Instagram influencer, even taking part in a beauty contest organised by the Russian version of Maxim magazine.

She also had an Instagram account in the name " Katty loves life " that had over 80,000 subscribers.
