Italy rocked by earthquake as it battles coronavirus lockdown – residents rush into street

An earthquake has rocked Italy – with local media reporting people have rushed into the streets. The National Institute of Volcanology and Geophysics registered a 2.6 magnitude earthquake 2km north of Camaiore, Tuscany.  The whole of the country is currently in lockdown as the government enforces strict measures to try to overcome the coronavirus crisis.  The epicentre was two kms from Camaiore and had a depth of eight kms.

One Twitter user said she felt the earthquake despite living an hour’s drive from the epicente.

They said: “I felt a shock and I find that there was a magnitude of 2.6 in Camaiore (which is quite a distance from where I am, an hour’s drive I think).”

Another Twitter user said: “#earthquake felt with a roar in #Camaiore and in #versilia.” 

One Twitter user said: “At 2 km from Camaiore, of magnitude 2, if you are sitting on it (practically on the coast) you can feel it.”

Italy has extended its emergency coronavirus measures to the entire country.

These include travel restrictions and a ban on all public gatherings.

taly’s coronavirus death toll jumped from 366 to 463 on Monday.

It is the worst-hit country after China.

Cases of the virus have been confirmed in all 20 Italian regions.
