Madeleine McCann probe sees police search for second German drifter

Police probing the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are searching for a second German drifter.

The man is believed to be a former friend of Christian Brueckner, who is suspected of abducting and murdering Madeleine.

He lived in Portugal at the time the British three-year-old vanished in 2007.

Officers are understood to be treating the man as a witness rather than a suspect.

He is believed to have lived in a camper van near a reservoir 30 minutes’ drive from the Praia da Luz resort.

Portuguese police quizzed at least one former associate of Brueckner’s in recent weeks about the mystery German.

A source said: “They were apparently asking about a guy Christian used to hang out with, a German man who lived out of town.

“They didn’t say much about him and didn’t even seem to know his name.”

Barragem da Bravura – Reservoir of the Wilderness – has repeatedly been linked to the case.

Locals previously described it as a “perfect” place to hide a body and volunteer fire crews used underwater equipment and boats to search the adjacent Bravura dam.

Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, remain hopeful their daughter, who would now be 17, is alive.
