A Romanian man has been arrested after allegedly carrying out a "horror" sex attack on his girlfriend's 18-month-old daughter that caused her to die.
Gabriel Robert Marincat, 25, was arrested by cops in Italy after the toddler, called Sharon, died on January 11 after being sexually abused and beaten.
Sharon was rushed to hospital in the city of Bergamo in the northern Italian region of Lombardy.
She was found to have serious injuries as a result of having been sexually abused and later died of her injuries, according to local media.
Autopsy results revealed signs of other injuries that had been clearly inflicted in the days previously and which had apparently not been treated.
An investigative judge who studied the report in Sharon's death described it as "pure horror".
After the report was published police identified and then arrested Marincat – who was the boyfriend of the dead child's mum who has only so far been identified by her first name Silvia.
On the day the child was hospitalised, the suspect had claimed that the earlier injuries were caused in his girlfriend's home in the municipality of Cabiate in the province of Como after the toddler pulled a heater on top of herself.
He said he noticed she was having difficulty breathing and had been sick when arrested by police on the orders of the Como Public Prosecutor's Office who ordered an autopsy.
The forensics team said the medical report ruled out the possibility that the child's previous injuries could have been accidental.
When he realised the police were looking for him, the suspect fled to his mother's apartment in Lentate sul Seveso in the province of Monza and Brianza, according to reports.
