Man ‘lost £300million worth of Bitcoin after mum threw out broken laptop’

A Bitcoin trader claims he lost cryptocurrency which would now be worth £300 million when his mum threw out his broken laptop.

Posting anonymously on Reddit, the man said Bitcoin "ruined his life" when he realised how much his 10,000 Bitcoin would be worth today.

He claimed to have purchased 10,000 Bitcoin in early 2010 as an experiment for around $80 (£50) after his college roommates convinced him it was a good idea.

But as he graduated and got on with his life, he forgot all about the coins.

As cryptocurrency started to hit the headlines more often, the man, now 25, said he suddenly remembered his purchase.

But when he went back home to try and find his old laptop – which had been sitting broken for years – he discovered his mum had thrown it out.

In a Reddit post in 2019, he said he was "angry, confused, shocked, in denial, sad, raged and so many other emotions".

He said he "literally fainted" and that the misfortune caused him to suffer a "mental breakdown".

As he kept remembering he could have been a multi-millionaire, the man said he sunk into a depression. He claimed he grew resentful towards his mum and blamed her for throwing away the laptop.

And despite his attempts to get his life back on track, he said the rising value of Bitcoin just deepened his depression.

"I am still broke, I still live with my parents, I am employed, but at a s****y job I hate, and have friends, but we don't talk much, and life is just not the same as it used to be," he wrote.

Some Redditors questioned whether his tale was true, but the anonymous user insisted it was accurate in the comments section.

In his post, the Redditor wrote: "I could have had the most epic f***ing life and most epic story to tell of how my riches came but it never happened. my life is on a downhill, I am severely depressed and just feel so s*** everyday.

"There is really no specific moral to this story, but I just wanted to vent this to someone or somewhere finally to get my story out.
