There has long been tension between the Obamas and Trumps, after now-US President Donald Trump won the election in 2016 to take over the running of the nation from Barack Obama. Barack’s wife Michelle has also been a heavy critic of Trump, who she has attacked on Twitter over issues such as bullying and climate change. But Michelle’s supporters were incensed after it appeared Melania had copied her decorations for a state dinner.

After Melania had received heavy criticism for the handling of her first US state dinner, when the time came for her to host Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his wife Jenny, the FLOTUS was aiming for an improvement.

In 2019, Melania tweeted to say that she had “carefully selected” the details of her latest event but avid fans of the First Lady and Michelle were quick to spot that she had copied her predecessor.

Some on Twitter said that Melania had taken a theme used by Michelle used during a state dinner thrown for German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2011.

At the time, the setting for the dinner was in the White House’s famed Rose Garden, which Melania also opted for.

Michelle decided to use an array of flowers, including roses, which were predominantly yellow.

Melania last year also decided to have yellow flowers with centrepieces adorned with more than 2,500 yellow roses from California.

The White House claimed this was to reflect the national flower of Australia, the golden wattle.

However people on Twitter claimed that Michelle was being copied by the current First Lady.

One Twitter user said: “Why must you always copy the Obamas?”

Another added: “Can’t you come up with anything original?

“Obama did it better. Everything!”

Another Twitter user said Melania was “never gonna measure up to the greatness of Michelle Obama”.

A Twitter user from Ohio added: “She will never outshine Michelle Obama.”

According to the White House Historical Association (WHHA), the role of the First Lady includes planning a state dinner.

The WHHA says that she, and her staff, are “responsible for the elaborate planning and attention” behind the ceremonies.

It adds: “These formal dinners involve the creation of invitations and guest lists, menus, flowers, table settings, seating arrangements and entertainment for the evening.

“The First Lady works closely with her social secretary, the executive residence staff and the State Department to coordinate every detail of this very special event.”

During her tenure as FLOTUS, Michelle welcomed leaders from across the world, including India, Mexico, China, Germany, South Korea, the UK, France, Japan, Canada, Singapore, Italy and Scandinavia.

Yet this wasn’t the first time Melania was alleged to have copied Michelle, with the latter’s ex-speechwriter admitting that the former had “plagiarised her work”.
