MP pays tribute to ‘Milf’ on Twitter leaving internet in stitches

An MP has gone viral after accidentally paying tribute to a "Milf" on Twitter.

Luke Pollard, who is MP for Sutton and Devonport in Plymouth, Devon, was responding to an article by PlymouthLive which shared the news that Dave Milford has retired from the RNLI after 32 years of service.

Some have questioned the wording of Mr Pollard's online tribute, which reads: "Thank you Milf. Your service has been incredible."

The tweet has currently been quote tweeted over 700 times, like over 1,500 times and retweeted hundreds of times.

"Milf" can often be used as a lewd acronym, with many social media users mocking the politician's tweet.

Mr Pollard later took to Twitter again and added: "This tweet seems more popular than I had expected so while I have your attention… you can donate to support Dave Milford and the lifesaving work of the @RNLI here," while linking to the RNLI's donation page.

People have been coming up with quick-witted comebacks to the MP's tweet which has taken social media by storm.

Someone responded: "When your mate's mum gives you a lift to school."

Another joked: "Me closing my Nigella cookbook."

A third said: "This is the gift that keeps on giving. Incredible."

Others praised the tweet, with one saying: "Fair play to the fella, tweet in error and accept it."

Mr Pollard, who has been MP in the constituency since 2017, was responding to a story about Mr Milford, 69.

He symbolically handed the keys of of the lifeboat to new coxswain and mechanic Simon Jeffery ahead of the former's well-earned retirement.

He had been coxswain at Plymouth since 2001 and began his career with the RNLI in 1989 when he became a volunteer.
