They told The Sun: "I could hear a lot of noise but I thought it was my girlfriend upstairs.

"Then, a load of police arrived and I opened the gate to let them down the back alley.

"They’ve only lived here for about six months."

Lee, appeared in front of Preston Magistrates’ Court on December 5.

He was remanded into custody, Lancashire Police said in a statement.

DCI Eric Halford said: "Firstly, my thoughts are with the loved ones of the baby girl at this incredibly difficult time.

"She remains in hospital in a critical condition and her family are being supported by specially trained officers.

"While a man has been charged, our investigation is very much ongoing and I would ask anyone with information or anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area around that time to contact police."
