A man who cornered a woman on a night bus and subjected her to a terrifying sex attack that left her feeling "powerless" and "frozen in fear" has been jailed.

Russian-born Eduard Chirmicii exposed himself to a woman in the early hours of February 1 as the pair rode on a London bus.

CCTV footage shows Chirmicii tried to approach the woman several times before moving and sitting in the seat next to her.

Kingston Crown Court heard the 24-year-old then pulled out his phone and tried to show her something, something the victim later told police was a pornographic film.

His victim then batted the phone away from her, and Chirmicii moved back to his own seat for a brief moment before unzipping his trousers and taking out his penis.

She tried to stop the 24-year-old and for a moment he moved back to his own seat but he later unzipped his trousers and took out his penis.

Chirmicii stood around 15cm from the woman’s face and asked her whether she liked it, to which she said “no” and tried to push him back.

The court heard he then left the bus but turned around and immediately got back on it, choosing to sit in a seat that was facing toward the victim.

CCTV then captured Chirmicii putting his feet on the seat blocking any escape and exposed himself again.

He then began touching himself and tried to pull the woman’s hand towards his crotch and it briefly rested on his penis before she managed to break free and push him away.

After the attack, Chirmicii got off of the bus and the woman approached the bus driver for help.

She also called police and Chirmicii was arrested when his victim saw him sitting on another bus going past them.

In a police interview, Chirmicii told cops he was "trying to make the woman’s acquaintance" because he "found her attractive" at the time.

The court read a statement from the woman which said she finds it "very hard to speak about the incident" without "having a panic attack," and described the attack as a "nightmare."

She said: "I remember feeling frozen to my seat and very vulnerable. It crossed through my mind several times that this man could do anything he liked to me and no-one could help.

"I felt powerless to stop him. In my opinion and the way he stood over me was him getting power over me. I think he knew exactly what he was doing and the more times I pushed him away the more it appeared to spur him on to come closer and closer to me. I thought he was going to rape me. It made me feel so small and as if I was his property."

Sentencing Chirmicii to 16 months behind bars, Judge Coello told Chirmicii: "You degraded and humiliated her and placed her in extreme fear that she was about to be raped in a situation where she felt isolated and confined on a bus, unable to get the bus driver to help her.

"I have read you are ashamed and embarrassed by what happened – so you should be, more so than for anything else in your life.

"Young women should be able to feel safe travelling on public transport whatever the time of the day. And they will receive the protection of the courts against incidents of this nature."

Chirmicii will also be subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years and will be made to sign the Sex Offender’s Register for ten years.

He has also been ordered to pay compensation to the victim of £1,000.
