A member of the controversial Putin-hating band Pussy Riot managed to flee Russia because of a clever disguise.

Masha Alyokhina, who has been thrown in jail several times this year for protesting against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, fled while under house arrest dressed as a food courier.

Alyokhina had been threatened with her house arrest being turned into another 21-day sting in jail, but she decided to escape instead.

According to the New York Times, she had been aware that Putin's police from Moscow were staking her house out, but she managed to leave with the new disguise and left her phone at home so she could not be tracked.

She did not divulge how she managed to get the disguise, or how she left without Moscow police noticing.

The 33-year-old was, however, turned away by border police in Belarus because she didn't have her passport – which had been confiscated by Russia.

But her friend, Icelandic performance artist Ragnar Kjartansson, managed to convince officials in Lithuania to grant her EU citizenship, and she was able to leave via the Belarus border to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius.

She said: “I was happy that I made it, because it was an unpredictable and big.

“I still don’t understand completely what I’ve done.

“A lot of magic happened last week – it sounds like a spy novel.”

Now that she has fled Russia, and is no longer under threat from Putin's officials, she has ramped up her anti-Russia rhetoric.

“I don’t think Russia has a right to exist anymore,” she said.

“Even before, there were questions about how it is united, by what values it is united, and where it is going.

“But now I don’t think that is a question any more.

“They are scared because they cannot control us.

“From here it looks like a big demon, but it is very disorganized if you look from the inside.

“The right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.”
