A Ryanair flight has declared a mid-air emergency after passengers started "smelling burning".

Holidaymakers who set off from Newcastle Airport for Mallorca have found themselves grounded in France and surrounded by fire engines, ChronicleLive reports.

Flight FR2347 departed Tyneside at around 8.50am on Tuesday and was flying near Toulouse when it is understood passengers complained of a worrying smell.

Those onboard had expected to set foot on the sunny Spanish island at around 12:35pm this afternoon but were alarmingly held up almost half way into the journey at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport.

Snaps from the plane show a fire engine parked up on the tarmac.

It has been reported passengers were initially told to stay seated on board, including being unable to use the toilet. However, this has now been relaxed.
