Tubby Rose West knits own cardigans after getting too fat for catalogue clothes

Rose West is having to knit her own plus-size cardigans because she is too fat for mail-order clothes.

The killer, 66, has ballooned to more than 18 stone in jail.

She has complained to fellow inmates that nothing fits her, despite having access to plus-size clobber in catalogues.

The keen knitter is knocking out woolly cardies in her cell at New Hall prison near Wakefield, West Yorks.

Despite being a convicted child killer, she is allowed knitting needles and wool due to her “enhanced status”.

A source told us: “West is a very accomplished knitter, but that’s not surprising given the time she’s had to learn. She’s said the cardigans she gets from the catalogues are a bit snug, especially when they have been through the wash.

“She figured that the best thing to do is knit her own, so that’s what she has been doing.”

Lifer West eats a poor diet of chocolate, crisps and sweets bought with her own money from the prison canteen.

She gets little exercise and prefers to spend most of her time in her cell knitting, reading and listening to Radio 4.

West became more reclusive after being told she cannot keep a pet budgie in her cell. The House of Horrors monster used to have a bird called Olive when she was at Low Newton jail.

But HMP New Hall has a no-pets rule and warders her told she could not apply to keep an animal.

Our source inside New Hall said: “Rose was really upset and still is.

“She feels isolated and wanted another budgie as a calming influence.”

Long-term inmates in some UK jails are permitted budgies but it is up to individual prisons to set their own rules.
