Wetherspoons pub refuses to show England’s World Cup games because of drunk fans

A Wetherspoon-owned pub has shocked punters by refusing to show any of England's World Cup games ahead of the vital group game against Wales tomorrow night (November 28).

But oddly, The Clifton Pub in Sedgley, Birmingham, has decided to show every single other World Cup game instead.

The decision not to show the two home nations' games comes after previous games, including those from the 2020 European Championships held last year, saw a fans causing trouble at the boozer.

This sparked the bosses' decision to stop showing the games.

And they announced it with a sign on the door.

It reads: “Due to previous circumstances in recent years where the World Cup/Euros have been shown at this pub, unfortunately we will not be showing any England games or Wales games during this event.

“All other World Cup games will be televised here at The Clifton. Thank you for your understanding.”

And, although the decision was made at a local level, it appears that the company's bosses are in agreement over the choice – which will see fans missing out on a potential England World Cup win if they make it that far.

Spokesman Eddie Gershon told local news outlets: “Unfortunately there have been problems in the town centre in the past when England have been playing.

“During the Euros the manager had to close the pub early on more than one occasion as a result of unruly behaviour in the town.

“Customers at the pub understand our decision not to show the England or Wales games.

“We do not wish to upset those people who wish to watch England or Wales games in our pub, but we believe our decision is the right one.”

England play Wales tomorrow, with the bookies putting England vs Brazil final as the firm favourite finale for the tournament in Qatar – not that anyone at The Clifton Pub will see it.
