A woman allegedly lured her pregnant friend to a fake baby shower before murdering her and cutting her unborn child out of her womb months after she herself miscarried.
Police have named Rozalba Grimm as the alleged prime suspect in the murder of pregnant Flavia Gohino, 24, on August 27 2020.
Authorities claim Grimm admitted to planning the attack five to six weeks before she tricked Flavia into coming to a fake baby shower.
She then allegedly bashed the expectant mother to death with a rock and then used a blade to cut her belly open and extract the unborn child.
Flavia was 34 weeks pregnant when she was killed and the newborn, who has been named Cecilia, survived the attack and is recovering at Joana de Gusmão Children's Hospital in Florianópolis.
Police claim Grimm admitted to becoming obsessed with Flavia a year earlier and plotted to steal the child from her after she suffered a miscarriage.
Grimm took the baby to a hospital and allegedly claimed she had delivered the baby herself, but medical workers became suspicious and called the police.
Grimm and her husband, Zulmiar Schiestl have both been charged with femicide, attempted murder, alleged childbirth, abduction of the incapacitated and concealment of a body.
In Facebook pictures posted in May and June, Grimm appears to be heavily pregnant months after her reported miscarriage.
It is not known if the pictures were staged or from the earlier failed pregnancy, Brazilian news sites have said.

The mother of another woman claims Grimm approached her daughter but she was primarily interested in having a girl.
She told NCS Grimm had uploaded a photo that showed her bloodied arms with a baby covered in a blanket before they were admitted into the hospital.
A second woman who was also pregnant with a boy was ignored by Grimm after she learned she too was expecting a boy, O Municipio reported.
