Young mum, 23, killed by stray bullet as she read Bible to baby before bedtime

A young mum was tragically killed after a stray bullet hit her in the head as she was reading the bible to her seven-month-old daughter in Zion, Illinois.

Melanie Yates was just 23-year-old when she was shot dead as she and husband got their two children ready for bed last Saturday.

After hearing loud bangs that sounded like fireworks, her husband Daniel called out to Melanie but got no response.

As reported by ABC 7, Melanie’s mother Lam Calderon said Daniel looked for Melanie after not hearing a response and found her shot in the head.

Daniel took their children to Melanie’s family, who live a few blocks away while they waited for an ambulance.

According to WGN, Melanie's father said Melanie had been “reading a Bible story to her seven-month-old and praying with her.

Melanie died in the ambulance but paramedics managed to resuscitate her.

She sadly passed away the following day after she was taken off life support.

In a statement on a GoFundMe page, the Calderon family wrote about Melanie, who they refer to as Lanie.

“Everybody who knew Lanie knows she loved Jesus Christ with every fiber of her being. There is no doubt whatsoever that she is in heaven at this very moment. But we on earth miss her very dearly.

“We miss her passionate, powerful prayers. We miss her infectious laugh. We miss her beautiful singing voice lifting songs of worship. We miss her feisty, witty humor. We miss her dedication to being an amazing, godly mom and wife.

“We miss her. And we wish with every fiber of our being she was here, but we know she’s in a better place.”

Melanie’s family set up the GoFundMe page to help provide financial assistance to her husband and young children during this difficult time.

Zion police and Lake County investigators said they found evidence of gunshots fired near the road but no one has been arrested.
